Requirements and limitations

Here are some simple rules for successful publishing in Mastodon.

Regular posts​

Text​

  • The maximum post length is 500 characters.
  • Hashtags are added in the post text (separated by '#').

Photos​

  • Supported formats: JPG, PNG, GIF.
  • The maximum image size is 8 MB.
  • Up to 4 images can be attached to a single post.
  • It is recommended to add alt text for accessibility.

Videos​

  • Supported formats: MP4, WebM.
  • The maximum video file size is typically up to 40 MB.
  • Videos can autoplay without sound.
  • Short videos with subtitles are recommended.
